Financial Aid

MAY 25 UPDATE ABOUT FINANCIAL AID

All workgrants have been awarded, the scholarship budget has been spent. If you must have financial assistance from FGC to attend the Gathering, please attend in 2009 at Blacksburg, VA, June 26-July 4 -- and register early!

FGC wants Friends of all financial means to attend the Gathering. Both scholarships and workgrants are available.

Workgrants
Workgrant positions are available and necessary for the functioning of the Gathering. Many of the workgrants are for morning or evening helpers in Junior Gathering.

Most workgrants range between $285 and $345. To apply for a workgrant, complete the “Workgrants” section when registering online, including your work interest (or write an explanatory letter to accompany a paper registration form).

Scholarships
The Gathering scholarship budget is generous, but it cannot meet all scholarship requests. Therefore, Friends needing financial aid to attend the Gathering should first approach their monthly, quarterly and yearly meetings.

First-time Gathering attenders are eligible for FGC scholarships only if they also receive aid from their monthly, quarterly or yearly meeting. FGC will automatically match such aid, and may provide additional assistance upon request (up to the established maximum). If a meeting is not able to provide scholarship assistance to a first-time attender, the meeting should contact FGC.

Returning attenders may apply for FGC scholarships whether or not they receive financial assistance from their meeting.

Teen and young adult scholarship aid is supplemented by two special funds managed by FGC: one for Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Friends ages 18–40 (thanks to Friends Institute) and another for Pacific Yearly Meeting (PacYM) Friends ages 14–25. PacYM Awards may exceed the FGC scholarship maximum.

Who is eligible and when? Priority for all FGC scholarship funds will be given to members and attenders of meetings affiliated with FGC. A special fund for
those in western unaffiliated meetings will also provide scholarships. Requests from other unaffiliated Friends will be considered starting May 5 if scholarship funds remain. If funds remain, scholarship requests from Friends arriving from outside of North America will be considered starting May 20.

Maximum FGC scholarships: To determine maximum scholarship amounts per registration, FGC calculates 50% of Total Fees (University Fees + Program Fees), assuming that Friends are in double rooms without air conditioning (AC), and that children sleep on the floor if eligible. You and your party may choose to select AC, singles, and beds for children, but this will not impact your maximum scholarship. Similarly, you may choose to commute or participate in a cooperative cooking meal plan, and this will not impact your maximum scholarship.

University Fees used for the calculation of maximum scholarship awards are as follows:
Adult/AYF/Senior $345
High School $285
Youth (age 11–HS) $175
Child (age 6–10) $80
Little Kids (under 6) $20

How to apply for scholarship assistance:
Complete the “Financial Aid” section when registering online. Include a request for a specific amount and your reasons for requesting. Alternatively, you may include this information in a letter to accompany a paper registration form (or email tra..click here..@fgcquaker.org).
