This is a reflective and interactive workshop. We will seek answers from the Compassionate One, or God. FGC has experienced a revival in the last 15 years in Friends traveling in the ministry. We will share stories of this exciting pioneering work within our community and consider ourselves in this stream of living history.
Goals are: - Understand details about Quaker giants who have
risen among Friends
- Crystallize my own ministry: my gifts in preaching and eldering
- Discuss current struggles among Friends and re-enact ways to overcome
21st century impasses.
First Day- With ring-tones and broadcasting, are we really silent Friends?
We'll hear Elizabeth Hooten's ministry to Friends. We'll see how
Friends in the 1660s offered fresh truths and a new-found
Christianity. We'll look at some rarely used quotes of Quaker
admonishments and testimonies. In pairs we'll reflect on What is
God asking of me? What fresh insights does the inner guide give me?
Exercise, discussion, worship and movement
Second Day- Is an elder also a Friends minister?
We'll hear Gene Knudsen Hoffman's story (PacificYM, 1900). We'll practice communicating using a
medley of compassionate, nonviolent and confrontative techniques. We
will try to draw out of each other the core of our personal ministry.
Exercise, discussion, song & worship.
Third Day- Angels and bandaids: Where does it hurt? What is the story of
Friends women like Dorothy Selebwa (Kakamega YM ) ministering during the AIDS epidemic in 2009? Learn about Susanna Morris (PhiladelphiaYM, 1700s) when she traveled with a concern for Friends' addictions.
Is the testimony of equality in full swing in your monthly meeting?
Personal stories of how Friends are looking at roots of violence (eg. gender inequality, FUM intolerance). Interactive sharing & worship.
Fourth Day- How do we drink from that everlasting pool of water? .
Minga's story working with women who've been violated. Leslie's journey
and homophobia. Loving ourselves as our Holy Mother loves us: Isaiah
48:21. Exercises of restorative practices.
Fifth Day- What do we need to move forward? Reenactment of Quakers traveling to heal a monthly meeting in trouble. Summing up. Sharing and worship.
