Corporate Discernment Materials

Corporate discernment is a topic about which FGC cares very deeply. Our interest arises both from our own experience – we have had powerful experiences of corporate discernment which have altered the very shape of FGC – and from our interactions with monthly meetings. Through our programs, we have heard from many of the meetings that we serve of a longing for deeper experience or exploration of discernment. As a staff, we have experienced gratitude for the commitment to corporate discernment shown by FGC’s governing body, Central Committee.

Over the past dozen years, FGC has undertaken two rounds of Spirit-centered long-term planning. The small Discernment in Long-Term Planning Committee has led the full 170+ person Central Committee (with its complement of more than a dozen different committees) in a multi-year discernment process of recognizing and naming the goals and objectives to which God is calling FGC. The resultant long-term plans have directed FGC’s program growth and led among other things to the creation of three new programs: Traveling Ministries, Ministry on Racism, and Youth Ministries.

It is this experience of practicing corporate discernment – of seeking God’s leading first in a committee, then having that call seasoned and tested with the calls of other committees, and finally making a decision as a full body – that has inspired this collection of resources for monthly meetings.
