Epistles from Yearly Meetings

From 2007

The Epistles attached (below) are wonderful accounts of what younger Friends did this at yearly meetings across the US and Canada!

Here are some highlights to wet your appetite:

  • Baltimore Yearly Meeting Young Adult Friends wrote a minute of support for same-sex marriage, which is quite beautiful.
  • Canadian Friends were blessed with the presence of Erin McDougall and Andrew Esser-Haines- two Young Adult Friends traveling in the ministry with a concern for intergenerational, inter-faith dialogue.
  • Intermountain Yearly Meeting Senior Young Friends enjoyed a ropes course, hiked, played, and held an intergenerational worship sharing.
  • New England Friends struggle to find unity to support their Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Bisexual, and Queer communities. They also celebrated in watching Peterson Toscano’s new one man play entitled The Reeducation of George W. Bush in which Peterson invited Friends to discern how they could educate “the little George Bush” within each of them.
  • New York Yearly Meeting’s Circle of Young Friends pondered issues of stewardship, and brought a query to a yearly meeting worship sharing that asked: “What is the role of Young Adult Friends in the yearly meeting, and how can we all work to nurture it?”
  • North Carolina Yearly Meeting Young Adult Friends enjoyed playing with the children, leading Bible study and being on a panel about the challenges they face as young Quakers.
  • North Pacific Yearly Meeting Young Friends continue to discern who they are as a community, while teens in Southeastern Yearly Meeting discussed the right sharing of world resources.
  • New England Friends mourned the death of a fellow young Friend, and New York came together as a supportive, spiritual community around a tragic accident involving two younger Friends during yearly meeting sessions.
  • Illinois Adult Young Friend’s spent time in worship sharing with queries on transitioning as individuals and a community. They also set the record straight on some important misconceptions about Illinois... To all you “stereotypin’ fools” out there that believe that Illinois is 100% flat, Mathiessen Park will prove you wrong...most of us in the AYF community being “stereotypin’ fools” ourselves, were incredibly shocked. In the woods at the park, we climbed about 50 feet down stairs just to find ourselves atop a canyon. When venturing another 50 feet down to the bottom of the canyon (that’s a total of 100 feet below cornfield level!) we encountered beauties such as caves and even a waterfall! ...With love, The Adult Young Quakers of the Corn

What an incredible year of worship, play, discernment, tears, laughter and fun! If anyone wants more information about attending one of these yearly meetings, please let me know! Enjoy reading. In peace, Emily
