Driving to Gathering

Please note the following travel difficulties in the Detroit Metropolitan area. There are a number of arterial road closures in the area.

Caution: Rush hour Monday - Saturday in the Detroit metropolitan area; morning from 7:00am to 9:30am; evening from 2:30pm to 6:30pm.

The following Interstate highways are closed for the summer:

I-75 Southbound out of Detroit to the Rouge River Bridge (Avoid attempting to use this route. Detours highly congested)

I-696 Westbound from I-94 to I-75 (Avoid attempting to use this route. Detours highly congested)

The following Interstate highways in the Toledo area undergoing major construction:

I-75 Both directions two miles south of Michigan border (Highway reduced to one lane in each direction. Major congestion during rush     hour. Travel lanes are narrow.

Update June 29, 2018, driving from Detroit:

One of the main east/west interstate highways in the Detroit area, I-696, will be closing from 9:00pm 6/29 through 5:00am 7/2. There is the possibility that a second closure of I-696 will take place the evening of July 6 through 5:00am July 9th.

Recommended Detours:

Coming from Canadian border crossing at Port Huron Michigan / Sarnia Ontario: Proceed on I-94 Westbound to I-275 Southbound. Proceed on I-275 Southbound to I-75 Southbound to Toledo.*

Coming from Canadian border crossing at Detroit Michigan / Windsor Ontario: Follow signage to I-375 Northbound to I-75 Northbound.  Proceed on I-75 Northbound to I-94 Proceed on I-94 Westbound to I-275 Southbound. Proceed on I-275 Southbound to I-75 Southbound to Toledo.*

Coming from Michigan Upper Peninsula/Wisconsin (also the Flint international Airport) via I-75: Proceed on I-75 Southbound to I-696 Westbound. Proceed on I-696 Westbound to I-275/I-96 Southbound. Proceed on I-275 Southbound to I-75, Southbound to Toledo.*



Coming from Detroit Metro Airport: Follow airport signage to I-94 West to I-275 Southbound Proceed on I-275 Southbound to I-75 Southbound to Toledo.*

Update June 29, 2018, driving from Detroit:

The simplest detour for Friends who had planned on using I-696 for their drive to University of Toledo is:

Take I-75 south to I-94 West.

Take I-94 west to I-275 south. Approximately 5 mile west of the airport.

Take I-275 south to I-75 south.

Take I-75 to Toledo. Note: there is construction at the Ohio border (see above).

Notes about Detours:

  • Detours can add 45 minutes to 2 hours to travel time depending on time of day.
  • I-94 detours will take travelers through the heart of Detroit.
  • Delays at border crossings can add 30 minutes to 1 hour to travel time depending on time of day.
  • Border Crossing note: “American Citizens: A passport is not required but is strongly recommended. Alternatively, you will need other documentation that shows proof of American citizenship such as a birth certificate, a certificate of citizenship or naturalization or a Certificate of Indian Status, plus a photo ID.”

Once on campus:

On campus, there is some road work that hasn’t yet been completed. A section of West Rocket Drive is closed between International House and Ottawa West. GPS directions may not be accurate. If you are going to Ottawa West, use the South Towerview Blvd. entrance off of Dorr Street. If you are arriving for Check-in in International House , use the West Towerview Blvd. entrance off of Secor Rd.
